Lucy on her journey with cystic fibrosis (CF) and its impact on her identity and mental health.
In this video Lucy acknowledges her initial resistance to associating her personality traits with the condition but gradually embraces the complexity of how CF has shaped her.
I’ve always hated the idea that like you are your illness. So by admitting that maybe part of my personality quirks is because of my illness, that kind of contributed to this narrative of everything comes back comes back my illness.
I wanted to disregard that idea for a long time because I was intent on not being my illness.
It’s a big thing to deal with. Of course it’s going to contribute… and your outlooks on life and your values.
Lucy shares her passion for music therapy and songwriting as outlets for navigating life’s challenges and expressing her emotions. She emphasises the importance of recognising the mental health aspect of CF and hopes for more open conversations on the topic in the future.
Through her story, Lucy highlights the journey of self-discovery and acceptance while living with a chronic illness.

I used to wonder if it was just my brain being the way that it is, or if cystic fibrosis and just having a very up-and-down, exciting, but stressful life of chronic illness also contributed to me living on a very intense plane of thought and feelings.
I’m glad that I have this very chaotic, but fun brain.

Through intimate interviews, captivating cinematography, and a deep dive into personal narratives, this series sheds light on the triumphs and challenges faced by those living with CF.
At the helm of this project is Raphael Recht, a 42-year-old multidisciplinary artist who himself grapples with cystic fibrosis. His previous endeavour, ‘Lifexpectancy,’ a conceptual hip-hop project, delved into his journey overcoming the hurdles of CF and learning disabilities to lead a fulfilling life.
Now, Raphael embarks on a new mission: to amplify the voices of others within the CF community. Through his lens as a filmmaker and photographer spanning nearly two decades, Raphael crafts poignant and visually stunning narratives that offer profound insights into the lived experiences of those with cystic fibrosis.
By partnering with us, Raphael aims to foster greater understanding and empathy for individuals battling the same condition he confronts daily.
