Life is a beautiful journey filled with unpredictable twists and turns. Along this path, we often encounter adversities that test our resilience, strength, and determination.
Throughout my life, I have faced two types of adversity: long-standing challenges due to being born with cystic fibrosis (CF) and acute setbacks caused by various sports injuries during my time as a professional rugby player.
In this reflective piece, I will share my experiences, strategies I used to overcome adversity, and the importance of maintaining a positive mindset and supportive network.
Long-standing adversity: Living with cystic fibrosis:
From the moment I entered this world, I found myself facing a lifelong battle with CF. This genetic condition affects multiple organs in the body, primarily the lungs and digestive system. Each day, I encountered challenges such as rigorous treatment routines, and the unknown having not faced this challenge as a family.
Accepting and going through the emotions:
My parents always told me that accepting my diagnosis and going through the emotions of grief was an essential first step in overcoming the adversity. When I came of age to understand what cystic fibrosis was and how it affected me, I allowed myself to acknowledge the frustration, anger, and sadness that naturally arose from living with this condition. By embracing these emotions, I gained a deeper understanding of myself and a newfound resilience. Along with important messages on my way of dealing with it. 1. Knowledge = power. 2. Exercise is the best medicine (physically and mentally).

Finding new challenges:
Amid the adversity of CF, I sought out new challenges that would help me focus on something beyond my illness. I discovered a passion for studying, educating myself and writing, which allowed me to channel my thoughts and emotions into something creative. Engaging in activities outside of CF gave me a sense of purpose and identity beyond the limitations of my condition.
Acute adversity: Sports injuries:
Later in life, I faced a different kind of adversity when I sustained a series of sports injuries. These setbacks, including knee, pec, and shoulder reconstructions, forced me to step away from my passion, rugby, as well as my job for a significant period of time. Suddenly, I found myself facing physical pain, emotional distress, and an uncertain future.
Understanding the steps to a successful comeback:
Overcoming acute adversity required a systematic approach and a commitment to the process of recovery. I immersed myself in understanding the steps required for a successful comeback. This involved seeking expert medical advice, adhering to rehabilitation protocols, and patiently allowing my body to heal. By breaking the journey into manageable steps, I gained a sense of control and progress, diminishing any feelings of helplessness

The importance of a positive mindset:
Maintaining a positive mindset was crucial during my recovery. I focused on visualising success and refused to let negative thoughts consume me. Reminding myself of the progress I had already made and setting realistic goals helped me stay motivated. A positive mindset allowed me to see setbacks as temporary and enabled me to bounce back stronger.
Supportive network:
Adversity is never conquered alone, and I’m immensely grateful for the supportive network I had during these challenging times. Friends, family, coaches, and teammates stood by my side, providing encouragement, understanding, and guidance. Their unwavering support reminded me that I was not alone in my struggle and that I had a team of individuals who believed in my ability to overcome.
Life has a unique way of presenting us with various adversities, both long-standing and acute. My journey with CF and sports injuries taught me valuable lessons about resilience, acceptance, and self-discovery. By embracing my emotions, finding new challenges, understanding the steps required for a successful comeback, maintaining a positive mindset, and relying on a supportive network, I was able to overcome these adversities. Through it all, I realised the importance of balance in life, cherishing every moment, and finding joy even in the face of adversity.
