By Darcy Miller
My name is Darcy Miller, I’m a Melbourne local living with cystic fibrosis in the eastern suburbs, and I want to share a remarkable chapter of my life with you.
This is a chapter that revolves around the profound impact of Trikafta on my outlook on exercise and, by extension, my entire perspective on life.
Before Trikafta, I was reasonably healthy for someone with CF, and played sports my whole life, but held back in genuine physical achievement due to my “limits.” The idea of exercise was more of a source of anxiety than anything else. Aerobic activities were met with fear and apathy. However, since incorporating Trikafta into my routine, everything has changed. It’s as if this medication has become a safety net, transforming fear into enjoyment and elevating exercise into a genuine passion.
Recently, I had the privilege of participating in the Melbourne Nike marathon, an accomplishment that stands as a milestone in my journey with cystic fibrosis. The nerves leading up to the marathon were rough, with some very shaky legs to start with off the line. Fortunately, I was surrounded by an incredible support system – my family, partner, and friends. Their encouragement not only propelled me through the race but also convinced me that the boundaries I once had were illusions set by myself.
Completing the marathon wasn’t just about crossing a finish line; it was about breaking through self-imposed limitations. The experience marked a turning point, not only in my approach to exercise but in how I navigate life as a whole. The newfound excitement for running and physical activity has become a driving force, a testament to the transformative power of perseverance and medical advancements like Trikafta.
Beyond personal achievements, I am now inspired to contribute to the cystic fibrosis community by raising funds for the cause. Running, for me, has evolved into a mission – a way to advocate for those who may not have the same physical freedom. It’s about pushing boundaries and making strides not only for myself but for the collective well-being of those affected by CF.
As I continue my running journey, my motivation centres around consistency. This is a word all CF’ers will know, from doctors and loved ones. It’s a mantra that extends beyond performance – it’s about creating a healthier and more resilient self. With each stride, I’ve felt improvements not only in my running abilities but in my overall lung and mental health. The idea that consistency breeds better performance and improved health has become a guiding principle, encouraging me to persist in my endeavours.
In conclusion, my experience with Trikafta and the Melbourne Nike marathon has been nothing short of transformative. It’s a narrative of overcoming fears, defying expectations, and finding purpose in advocating for a cause larger than oneself.
As I eagerly look forward to the future, my commitment to running and raising awareness remains unwavering, fuelled by the belief that every step counts in the journey towards a healthier, more vibrant life.
